Bret from Los Angeles, CA

Homelessness damaged my health. Now need a fridge + grown-up trike to get healthy

I walk with a cane + just got an apartment with no kitchen. Meeting this need will let me get exercise, buy and keep healthy food + regain my health.

Thank you! May 21, 2013

I wanted to cry with gratitude for everyone who contributed to helping me start my life over again. Thank you very much for finding the time to go out of your way and help a poor stranger like me. May all of your endeavors in your own lives come true. - Bret, Recipient
We were overjoyed to find the message stating Bret's need had been funded in just 2 weeks! Thank you to all of you for supporting Bret as he transitions from our shelter to his new home. - Aiko Enoki, Validator

My need and situation

Right now, my biggest challenge is my poor health has created a disability which has made it impossible for me to go back to work and provide for myself. I also often have to walk with a cane, which will make it difficult for me to transport groceries and laundry back and forth from my new apartment. My need includes an adult tricycle with a basket and adjustable speeds, as well as a basic refrigerator/freezer for my new apartment

My goal is to rebuild the strength in my legs and regain my health. Riding a bicycle on a daily basis, as well as having a refrigerator to store healthy foods, will be critical to achieve stability and a nutritious program.

My current situation is I'm resident at PATH Hollywood transitional shelter and have finally found a new apartment to start my life over.

Meeting this need will help me because it will enable me to take care of tasks and chores in my neighborhood that I otherwise would not be able to without a car.

I think of myself mostly as a creative person with a tremendous imagination that I would like to more greatly utilize by writing books for people to enjoy.

I'm most proud of my perseverance after years of adversity and coming this far in my life.

I've worked at jobs including TV and film script proofreader, construction engineer, and video game tester.

Need funded!

Thank you for helping Bret fund this need.

Validated by Aiko from PATH (What does this mean?)

I have known Bret since October 2012. I have been his case manager since that time and have worked with him all throughout his time at PATH Hollywood.

I think meeting this need is important because Bret's physical disability has severely diminished the distance he can travel and a new bike will allow him to do the things that anyone else would be able to do - like go to the supermarket, library, and laundromat with little strain. And having a refrigerator to store food and cook his own meals will really help restore his health.

This will move the recipient's life forward by allowing him to increase his general health and stability.
