Thank You from Angie Sep 30, 2013

During this period of my life I began to think that people just didn't care about each other anymore. All the tests I've gone through over the past year has pushed me into thinking about the future in a way that I've never done before. I am grateful to know that there is still compassion in this world and this experience has taught me to never let anything rob me of this. Thank you for having faith in my vision.

Thank You from Jeffery, Validator at Young Detroit Builders Sep 30, 2013

I would like to thank all the people who helped out this hard working woman. I note that some gave multiple times, and for that I express extreme gratitude. I don't know if anyone actually "deserves" such an outpouring, but from what I know of Angie, your gifts will not be wasted and will bear much fruit in her life, the life of her daughter, and in the lives of those people who Angie hires as she grows her business.

My need and situation

My current situation is I am a single mother of a 5 year old who in the past few years have been laid off one to many times. I want to be my own boss now. I have always been independent, but due to the economy and becoming a single mother my life has become a little more complicated. I am, however, committed to showing my daughter that regardless of the circumstance if you do your best, things will work out.

My goals are big, and I'm done with just getting by. I am a budding entrepreneur, currently seeking funding to purchase a lawn mower, gas string trimmer and leaf blower to help kick start my property preservation company.

My plan is to show my daughter that life is about taking chances and doing what you care most about, even if there is no one there to support you. I want her to understand that once you have established yourself in doing what you want, you should give back to those in need. I think of myself mostly as an honest, dependable, hardworking woman. I'm most proud of my daughter because she is a reflection of who I am now. She's confident, and unafraid of new things, and I hope to be her greatest role model.

With my equipment I will be able to begin building a clientele base and gain credibility in the community. As my business continues to grow, I plan on giving back to the community by employing local residents. I want to make it clear through my work and accomplihsments that you can choose where and what you want to be, despite odds or stereotypes. I've worked at jobs including painting, custodial, CNA, snow removal, and landscaping so I know one of my biggest challenges will be gaining credibility as a woman in a predominately male field. I am up for the challenge, and meeting this need will help me start my path to success. Likewise, the income gained through my business will help me support my family.

I have known Angie since she entered our program in late April. She has been a regular participant in our entrepreneurial training program and is constantly searching for opportunities to gain additional skill sets.

Meeting her need is important because she has shown herself committed to her underlying goal of being self-sufficient as an entrepreneur. Though our conversations I believe she will follow through on her commitment to give back by putting others to work.

This will move the Angie's life forward by empowering her to begin her entrepreneurial career. As a woman, she faces some biases. I think success in this field will help to overcome those biases. More importantly, it will give her access to contacts in the property preservation field. Finally, it will allow her to begin the process of building up capital to continue her plans.

If I had to use one word to describe Angie, I would use DRIVEN. She will not let anything prevent her from achieving her goal. Filling this need will simply remove an obstacle, thus making it easier for her to move forward.
