Garrett from Evanston, IL

My dream is to become a business manager. I need a laptop to take online classes towards my BA

Online classes will open up management positions for me at work, but right now I live paycheck to paycheck & can't afford a computer to take them on.

Updates

A lovely thank you from Melissa, Garrett's validator: Jan 30, 2014

I want to thank all the donors who participated in Garrett's request for a laptop. We received the amount that he requested and it has been purchased. Garrett will be attending the classes he needs to succeed in two weeks. He can't thank you enough. He was so thrilled that this really happened.

Garrett says thank you! Jan 30, 2014

Thank You for everything. I have just been informed by Melissa that the laptop has arrived. This news brings great joy to my heart. Now I will be able to pursue my life-long dream and at the young age of 51 years I will have the opportunity to resume my education online and obtain my Bachelors in Business Administration. This is a quest that I started over 30 years ago. Again thank you, thank you, thank you.

My need and situation

I need a laptop to attend online schooling. This includes a Samsung laptop with all operating systems and equipment.

I have been given an opportunity through my employer to go to school online and obtain a Bachelor's degree in business, with my employer paying all costs. I do have an Associate's in business and to obtain a Bachelor's would fulfill a life long dream.

Meeting this need will help me because it will open up opportunities for me to move into management positions possibly with my current employer. My goal is to become a manager and gaining a Bachelor's in business management will definetly put me in the position to obtain this goal and help me out of a situation of living paycheck to paycheck.

My current situation is I'm working fulltime sustaining my rent and a car note and medical expenses as a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic.

I'm from Chicago, raised in Michigan. I live in Evanston, Il.

I'm most proud of all of my children. I have a son and two daughters who are hard workers. My youngest daughter is in her second year of college. They are the joy of my life.

I'm happiest when I am able to help someone.

Something interesting about me is that I am 8 years clean and sober. I am a former homeless man who battled alcohol addiction and now have not had a drink since january 22, 2005. I am currently an inquiry response coordinator for Career Education Corporation. Also, I am a diabetic and struggling to maintain my insulin prescriptions with little help from my medical insurance. I have been given an opportunity through my employer to go to school online and obtain a Bachelor's degree in business, with my employer paying all costs. I do have an Associate's in business and to obtain a Bachelor's would fulfill a life long dream.

We met in 2009 when Garrett needed financial assistance to move into new housing. I assisted him with a security deposit and first month's rent.

I think meeting this need is important because Garrett will be able to finish his education and excel in the business environment as a manager. Also that his employer offered him this opportunity states that he will excel in his new endeavors.

He is a full time employee, a father of three and is working diligently to maintain a sober and productive life. He has excelled in his position as a college advisor and is working hard to improve his life and the lives of his children.
