Mickie from Chicago, IL

Preparing to start my new welding career. I need boots and protective gear.

I wasn't sure women could be welders, but then I found JARC's program! I'm excited that I've found my career. All I need is gear to get started.

My need and situation

I am a young woman seeking a new career. I am a mother who has worked very hard to provide for my young son. My father is a welder and that was something I always wanted to try. However, I was really not sure if it was the right thing for me because of the fact that I'm a woman. When I found JARC's program for women to become welders, it inspired me.

My goals are to keep my son healthy and cared for. I would like to build a career in welding. Recently I got my first positive feedback on a weld and I'm so proud of that. As I've grown I've realized how important it is to make a good transition from adolescent into adulthood. I've finally figured out who I want to be and what I want to be. I have realized that I can have a good career and make a living while still being me. I am not afraid to work hard but I'm also not afraid to weld with my eyelashes on.

I need welding gear, including a helmet, steel toed boots, welding gloves, and sleeves.

Meeting this need will help me because I am a young woman applying to a non-traditional field. I have to work very hard to make others take me seriously and I know that having this gear will show future employers my commitment to taking on this career.

Mickie impressed me in her interview first with how much she wanted to work in the field of manufacturing. She has a very concrete understanding of what it means to work in a field that is traditionally not open to women, and has many ideas for how to change the field. She is driven and motivated. Although she is young I have been impressed with the way she handles herself and how seriously she takes the work she has ahead of her.

About Jessica

My job title is Program Coordinator. My work involves case management of all students enrolled in our welding class. What I like about my job is getting to see students get placed in employment and maintaining employment after working so hard. I love watching people pay off debts, save for houses,… Read more
