Jewel from Lapu Lapu, Philippines

My pastry business is helping my family get an education. A mixer will help it grow!

If I achieve this I would be able to increase my income and be able to continuously send my 5 younger siblings to school.

My need and situation

I am Jewel Algar, a 32-year-old alumna of the Academy for Creating Enterprise. I have a cake and pastry home based shop called Jewelicious Cakes which I started few years back after I graduated from the Academy's business course. It's a small business but it helps me provide for myself and my 5 younger siblings. I am playing the role of a mother to my family since my mother died 12 years ago. I started my home based cake business because I did not finish a college degree which limits my employment opportunity in the place where I live.

My goals are to improve the quality of my cakes and pastries and produce more on a daily basis. I can do this if I have a high speed mixer instead of the handheld type that I am currently using right now. I do wedding and customize cakes and different kinds of pastries. I have a dream of putting my younger siblings to college so they could get better opportunities in the future.

I need a high speed electric mixer to improve the quality of my products and increase the quantity output as well. If I achieve this I would be able to increase my income and be able to continuously send my 5 younger siblings to school.

Meeting this need will help me because I would be able to improve not only the quality and quantity of my baked products, I would also be able to expand my services to baking lessons and get an income when I have no orders for my cakes.

Jewel is an alumna of the Academy for Creating Enterprise and is a neighbor as well. I have known her family for more than 10 years now and I have seen the struggles that she went through right after her mother passed away. Being the eldest daughter, she became the one in charge of taking care of her 5 younger siblings. She didn't finish her college degree because there wasn't any money to spare. She studied baking and improved her skills by enrolling in free community classes. She needs help in purchasing a high speed mixer which would allow her to bake more cakes and open the door to providing baking lessons to augment her income. She is a talented baker and very patient in marketing her products.
