Mary from Brooklyn, New York

It's hard to get to the library to apply for jobs. A laptop will help me a lot!

I have been going to the library to apply but it is far from me and I have programs during the day which conflict with its hours. A laptop will let me look for work from home.

My need and situation

My name is Mary. I am 34 years old and unemployed. I am recently divorced and had to move out of my home and live with my mother as I am not able to afford an apartment. I have been trying to get a job. I am currently working with ACCES-VR for employment.

My goals are to find employment and get permanent housing. Hopefully if I get a laptop it will help me find employment.

I need a laptop computer to use daily to send out my resume during all hours (not just library hours). The library is very far from me and I have trouble getting transportation there, plus, the programs I attend during the day conflict with library hours. I have experience in customer service and I am seeking jobs as a receptionist or in customer service.

Meeting this need will help me improve my chances on getting employment. Once I’m employed, I’ll be able to secure housing for myself.

I know Mary through my colleague, P.O. Washington. Mary was employed but lost her job due to the nature of her offence. Mary has been on probation for the last 4yrs and has not been in any trouble since her last offence. Mary has only one arrest on her record but it has been difficult for her to find employment because she has two young children and without family support it is difficult for her to find a babysitter. I believe if she gets a laptop, it will make it easier for her to find employment. The library is far for her and transportation is difficult to come by for her. She also attends programs during the day, so she won’t be able to stay long at the library because of the hrs. its open.
