Noe from Los Angeles, CA

I'm a cancer survivor & just had surgery. I need a bed so I can recover at home.

The hospital won't release me until my home's equipped for rehabilitation. I need a bed, shoes for physical therapy, and grab bars for the bathroom.

Overview

I am a 21-year-old cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with medulloblastoma at the age of 5 years old. I received radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and had brain surgery by the age of 6. I had been cancer free until a month ago when my doctors saw something abnormal in my brain and decided to do surgery again.

My goal is to recuperate properly over the next 6 months. I am going to go through rehabilitation for physical, language and speech, and occupational therapy. Once I am strong again I want to continue searching for employment to be able to help my parents and become independent.

Up until this point I have been sharing a bed with siblings, however I now need my own bed at home to be able to be released to parents' care. My parents also need to make our home accessible to me by installing grab bars in the bathroom. Lastly, I am in need of comfortable shoes for my physical therapy sessions.

Meeting these needs will help me because if my home is accessible to my rehabilitation needs, I will be released from the hospital and rest at home with my parents. They both have been missing work to stay at the hospital with me. Once I recover I want to continue my job search and help younger children with disabilities.

Noe has been a LIFT-LA member for about a year now. At LIFT-LA we help connect community members with resources such as employment, housing, health, and education. In Noe's case, we worked together to help him look for employment. We created resumes, helped him strengthen his interviewing skills, and applied to a variety of jobs. Noe was even able to secure a couple interviews. Due to his unforeseen surgery, his employment goal will remain on hold. Right now the main priority is getting him a bed to sleep while he recovers and supporting his family with any other resources needed, such as shoes and grab bars. Noe is a very sweet and brave young man, and he is genuinely loved by our LIFT-LA staff.
