Jerry from Chicago, IL

Eager for stable housing before winter comes! I need help with my security deposit.

After my hip surgery & with winter coming, I need housing more than ever. All that's currently standing in my way is $350 for a security deposit.

Overview

I am a 54 year old Chicagoan who is experiencing homelessness. I'm trying to get help in order to pay for the security deposit of a new apartment and maintain my improving health.

My goals are to improve my health - I recently had hip replacement surgery, and I'm still in need of an additional surgery for my other hip. I also hope to be stably housed before winter as I am disabled and need a comfortable place to call home.

I need assistance with a portion of a security deposit so I can live with my niece and her family. I am able to pay rent every month, and a portion of the security deposit, but cannot cover the entire security deposit.

Meeting this need will help me because my niece is excited to have me live with her family and help her watch her children while she's at work. Moving in with my family will mean I'll be out of the harsh weather and have somewhere comfortable to live so I can schedule my hip surgery.

I've known Jerry for over a year when he first came to the EDSSC and enrolled in our long-term case management program, the Open Doors Project. Jerry spent nine months working on goals related to housing, health, transportation, and benefits, and was a great participant throughout the program! Jerry recently came in and shared he has the chance to move in with his niece and her family, but needs some extra help covering a portion of the security deposit. He receives monthly benefits, and would be able to pay his rent once he moves in. Jerry has such a positive spirit and always has a smile and joke to share with anyone he meets. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
