We received this message from Maria, Fleetwood's validator at Berkeley Food and Housing Project, regarding just how much your donations have helped Fleetwood move forward:
"Fleetwood went shopping for a bed and the first one he tried was it! He couldn't believe how comfortable it was and was looking forward to setting it up and sleeping on it at home.
"He recently was approved for a sleep apnea machine and it will be much easier to utilize it now that he can plug it in next to a bed. Fleetwood wanted to ensure that each person who donated knew how much it meant to him and how much their support helped him and will continue to."
Overview
My name is Fleetwood and I am a former security guard. I enjoy reading and writing. I have been in my apartment for a little over a year. I have bi-polar and work on coping with sleep apnea and a musculoskeletal disorder.
My biggest goal is to be more functional. I want to become more outgoing and isolate less in my apartment. I eventually want to be volunteering or working about 25 hours a week.
Up until recently, I have been sleeping on my couch and that was going well for me. However, recently I have noticed that it is starting to take a toll on my body. I need an adequate mattress and box spring to be comfortable and take care of my physical health.
Meeting this need will help me to take better care of my physical health. When I am healthy I can work on becoming more outgoing and jump at any volunteer or work opportunity. Being around more people will help me to isolate less and become more comfortable in the community.

I know Fleetwood through the Shelter Plus Care Program at Berkeley Food & Housing Project. I've known Fleetwood for about a year and have been incredible happy to see his transition from homelessness to housed and the success he is having. He has made huge strides in managing his household and is looking to make even more progress on getting back out into the community. In order to participate in the community, he needs to feel comfortable at home and having a good mattress will help him do just that.
