Overview

I am a 57-year-old African American woman who loves the Lord and is very active in my church community.

One of my biggest goals is to help connect the past to the present while moving into the future. I feel that a large part of the African American culture has gotten diluted. I would like to bring who we are back to the forefront. I would like to start discussions and be an agent of change in my community.

My senior center is going on a trip to Washington D.C. to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The trip cost is outside of my means and I am asking for partial assistance in purchasing my ticket for the trip. I plan to raise money at a flea market, save money, and also get a small amount of assistance from my family. Additional assistance from Benevolent would ensure that I can cover the numerous costs of the trip.

This is going to be a life-changing experience. Walking into this museum will answer some unanswered questions and will help close the door to the past and open the door to the future. This trip will afford me the opportunity to have a better understanding of my ancestors’ struggle. I can bring this experience and understanding back to my community and share it with others.

I have known Cabelle for 2 years through the Shelter Plus Care Program. Since I have worked with her, Cabelle has taken more control over her health, joined her local senior center and trained to become a Sunday school teacher at her church. Cabelle lit up when she told me about the potential of going on this trip and it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for her. She is on a low, fixed income and is working hard to save money and raise money but anything else that can be contributed would make sure this trip could become a reality for her. It would be incredible for Cabelle to be able to go on this trip and return to her community with a stronger connection to her heritage and African American culture.
