Working part time but want to advance my career; need laptop to take online classes

I've taken classes but public access computers don't give me enough time to work. A laptop will solve this. My goal is to become computer literate.

Lorena got her laptop! Here's her message: Jul 23, 2013

I am so grateful, delighted and pleased with the laptop that I have been able to purchase, thanks to the generosity of Benevolent and its supporters. My life is definitely changing in a very positive direction. Just a couple of weeks ago, a young woman approached me on the street. She explained how she saw my video on Benevolent's website regarding my need for assistance in purchasing a laptop. I very excitedly explained to her that my need had been met, and was able to share with her my new laptop and my experience with Benevolent. I'm still learning how to work the different functions on the laptop. I have also enabled my cellphone with a "hotspot", which provides me with the capacity to access the internet while at home. My future plans are to start with an Into to Computers course, followed by Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint classes at a community center in the very near future. I am looking forward to bringing my skills up to date. Thanks every so much!!!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! I am honored, pleased and overjoyed that my need has been met. This is a definite opportunity for me to better myself and increase my knowledge. I am so looking forward to gaining a better perspective of and increasing my computer literacy. With this gift I plan to excel and better my job marketability.

Lorena's making great progress! A note from her validator, Anna Apr 4, 2013

Lorena moved into her housing, she reports being very excited to be settling into her apartment and is looking forward to her new computer so she can spend her time productively in her educational and employment goals.

Overview

I need a laptop computer to learn Microsoft applications and take online classes so I can have more career opportunities.

My current situation is I am living in a homeless shelter and working part time.  Although I have taken computer classes and have very limited time to use public access computers, I need more time to practice and learn, so having my own laptop computer is essential.

Right now, my biggest challenge is finding housing I can afford on my limited income. I know that taking online classes will improve my chances of full time employment.

My goal is to become computer literate and use my new skills to advance my career and become self-sufficient.

Meeting this need will help me because I will be able to use my free time productively, practicing and studying. I would not be dependent on public space computers.

I think of myself mostly as a carefree spirit, and I am a very approachable person.

I'm most proud of of my tenacious spirit and my very outgoing and charismatic personality.

I've worked at jobs including being a flight attendant for over 20 years.

Something interesting about me is my way of speaking.

I have known Lorena since we began working together in August of 2012. As her Career Specialist, we have worked on finding her employment and setting other short and long term goals.

I think meeting this need is important because due to the fact she only works weekends now, she has the devotion and the support to complete online classes, but the public access computers she has available to her don't give her the time needed to succeed at her goal.

This will move Lorena's life forward by giving her the important computer skills needed to succeed in today's world.

Lorena is very close to moving into independent supportive housing. She is a hard worker and is motivated to keep on track. She has a life time of experience that she is willing to share with others, being able to learn and utilize today technologies will allow her to accomplish great things.
