Leo from Chicago, IL

Worked as a school security guard for 17yrs. Now I need a cane to walk through life securely

My diabetes has effected my balance and mobility. With a cane I could safely run errands, get to meetings and appointments and build my strength.

Thank you so much for funding my cane. I often find myself immobile without something to stabilize me and this cane will really assist me and help me through the day. I can't thank you enough for giving me this amazing gift, and it is truly inspiring to see people care so much for others.

An update from Allison at LIFT May 16, 2013

The LIFT team is thrilled that a generous Benevolent donor funded Leo's cane! He is incredibly grateful and excited. We ordered the cane today and he should have it by May 25.

Overview

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2004. As the years go by, I continue to become weaker. I frequently find myself losing my balance, so I need a cane.

Meeting this need will help me because it would give me more confidence to be able to run errands and go to appointments without the fear of falling. My goal is to be able to complete the tasks that are before me. For example, I have meetings and appointments to attend. I am motivated to stay busy and active.

Right now, my biggest challenge is that I am always afraid I am going to fall. At times, dizziness hits me suddenly. I have difficulty sleeping. I cannot work due to this illness. I sometimes miss meetings and appointments because of my condition. I cannot leave the house when it is snowing due to fear of falling.

I think of myself mostly as a generous person. I give away a lot of my things to people in need. I would really appreciate your help. I always try to help those in need, but I am the one in need now.

I've worked at jobs including a security officer at the Board of Education for 17 years.

I'm most proud of that I'm still alive. I have had numerous near-death experiences.

Something interesting about me is I really enjoy visiting Chicago's museums.

Leo has been working with LIFT since February 2013. He has worked with a variety of our volunteers, who have really enjoyed working with him. It has been a pleasure getting to know Leo. He has dealt with a variety of hardships in his life, but he is still motivated to keep going. I am impressed by his resiliency.

I think meeting this need is important because such a simple, low-cost item will make a world of difference for Leo. A cane will allow him to feel confident leaving his apartment every day, rather than being overcome by his fears of falling and dizziness due to diabetes.

This will move Leo's life forward by allowing him to stay active in the community, go to doctor's appointments, and run errands.
