Tony got his furniture! Sep 27, 2013

Benevolent just received word from Eleanor that Tony got a comfortable couch to use while he's studying. There was a little money left over, so he was also able to buy some professional clothing to wear to work!

Tony sent us this thank you: Jun 25, 2013

I am ecstatic about the furniture that I received and very, very much appreciative. I thank you all for your donations and it will definitely assist me in my endeavor to pursue the paralegal program.

Overview

I need furniture for my apartment. This includes a bookcase and a couch.

Right now, my biggest challenge is that my apartment is vacant. It drains my spirit to come home to an empty apartment. My entire income goes to other expenses, including rent, utilities, food, and transportation. I currently do not have the funds to buy furniture to make my apartment feel like a home.

Meeting this need will help me because I will then be able to invite family members and classmates to my home. I would enjoy welcoming my family into my home. Also, I would be able to host study sessions. Because I have internet, my home would be a great space to host these sessions.

My goal is to become a paralegal. With this furniture, my home would become a better study space by creating an atmosphere more conducive to studying. This program requires a lot of reading and collaborating with other classmates.

I am currently in a two year housing program. At the end of this program, I will need to be self-sufficient and I am working hard in both school and work to accomplish this goal. Having furniture is essential to me in moving forward in my life.

My current situation is that I am a student in a paralegal program. I am working part-time as a legal specialist. I moved into subsidized housing a year ago. I recently alleviated a situation involving bedbugs in my apartment and am looking for new furniture.

I have 15 years experience volunteering with the Lighthouse for the Blind. I am very proud of that experience. At the completion of my paralegal program, I hope to be an independent contractor in elder law, during which I would assist seniors in applying for disability and other government benefits.

I think of myself mostly as an advocate for seniors. The career I am pursuing provides me with the opportunity to fulfill a desire to assist and comfort seniors.

I'm most proud of my tenacity. I am a lifelong learner, and I try to instill the value of good education in others.

I've worked at jobs including being a medical and legal transcriptionist at the University of Illlinois, University of Chicago, and Cook County Press. I worked five years at each one of those places. I've also been a tutor for the Chicago Public Schools.

Something interesting about me is that along with seniors, I enjoy working with people with physical and mental disabilities.

I have known Tony for almost a year. Throughout this time, he has been working hard at school and work, which are vital steps he is taking in preparing for full time work in the legal field.

I think meeting this need is important because Tony deserves to make his apartment feel like a home. He would love to host study sessions with classmates and family events. Getting furniture would make this possible for him.

This will move the recipient's life forward by helping him feel more comfortable and productive in his own home. He needs to concentrate on his school work, and his apartment is a quiet place for him to do that.

Tony loves working with people and helping people achieve their goals. He never gives up on his own, either!
