Kris received her furniture! Dec 5, 2013
We're thrilled that Kris has received her furniture. Thanks to a generous in-kind donation, not only was she able to get a brand new pull-out sofa for her son to sleep on, but she had extra funds to finish furnishing her apartment.
Kris says:
Thank you to all the Benevolent supporters who helped me make my home wonderful! You all sincerely made my year and helped me to know that there are good people who truly care out there. Be blessed!
Here are the pictures of Kris' new furnishings:
Overview
I need a sofa bed or a futon for my teenage son. He is on the honor roll. I only have a one bedroom apartment, so at this time we need a sofa bed or futon. Right now he is sleeping on an air mattress in the living room and though we have to make do for now, I would like him to have a more restful sleep. I am putting money into savings every month, but I don't want him to get far into the school year with bad sleep.
Meeting this need will help me because I would need a few months to be able to save for this furniture but by then we might be half way through his junior year and I would like him to have a comfortable place to sleep.
My goal is to be able to take the savings we would have used for this purchase and put it towards a fund for my son to be the first in our family to go to college instead.
My current situation is that my son and I have just moved out of a shelter after going between four different ones over the last three years. We have a one bedroom apartment.
I'm from the south side of Chicago, though I've lived throughout the Midwest.
I'm most proud of my son.
Something interesting about me is my love of learning and willingness to grow. Because of that, I like to read a great deal.
I'm happiest when I have quiet time alone. Life can get hectic, but moments to calmly sit with your thoughts and yourself is wonderful.
Need funded!
Thank you for helping Kris fund this need.

We met when Kris began with The Cara Program in January of 2013. When Kris first enrolled in our program, she did not have custody yet of her son due to the shelter situation and the fact that teenage boys are not allowed in many shelters with women--even abuse survivors. Within two months, I watched her press through court appointments and complete every task set before her to restore her family. If there is one thing I know about Kris, it is that she is determined and truly loves her son.
I think meeting this need is important because we all know that it can be challenging to make a house a home and how important restful sleep is to a teenager especially.
