Thank You from Trisha, Validator Nov 5, 2013
The funds were used to purchase a stove and twin beds and mattresses for the family. We ended up getting a refrigerator donated to the family at no cost. The family was extremely grateful and Phyllis expressed that she couldn't wait to cook a Thanksgiving meal for the family. Thank you for you generosity!
Overview
A stove, and refrigerator will help me and my grandchildren transition into our new setting and allow me to provide meals more efficiently.
My goal is to continue working as much as possible and raise my grandchildren in a safe and loving environment.
Meeting this need will help me because I will be able to store and cook food safely so that it does not go to waste.
I am a 53 year old grandmother that recently took custody of my two young grandchildren, a 3 year old boy and 7 year old girl. The children's father passed away 3 years ago and their mother just left one day and never came back. I am legally disabled but still try to work when I can taking care of older adults that need help in their homes.
I was not expecting to have to raise my grandchildren and my disability payments are not enough to cover all the family's needs. When I obtained custody I had to move from my apartment to a house to have enough room and the house did not come with a stove or refrigerator. We have been cooking using a small plug-in skillet and crock pot. We keep things cool by using a cooler and bags of ice.
I have six children and eleven grandchildren. Currently I have custody of two of my grandchildren ages 3 and 7. I recently received custody when their mother left unexpectedly and their father passed away three years ago.
While I am disabled I still have a part-time job and work hard to support my family. I love children and working with older people and am most happiest when my surroundings are clear.
Need funded!
Thank you for helping Phyllis fund this need.

I met Phyllis when she enrolled her 3 year old grandson into the Inkster Head Start program. The child and family are in my caseload. I see the child in class on a daily basis. I most often have contact with grandma by phone and see her in person about once a week.
I think meeting this need is important because the grandmother is trying very hard to keep her family together and avoid the children having to go into foster care. She really cares about her grandchildren and giving them a safe and loving home to grow up in.
Even though Phyllis is disabled herself, she still makes time to help other disabled adults to be self-sufficient enough to stay in their own homes. It is something that she values and I can see that she is a truly caring individual.
