Inviolata

Inviolata from Eldoret, Kenya

I've lived through hardship; my new skills give me hope. To start work I need funds.

I've learned how to weave traditional Kiondo bags out of sisal material. With only $300 to get started, I can begin a new chapter in my life.

Overview

I am a 46 year old widow and fistula survivor. I got a fistula during childbirth when I was 16 and lost the baby. I have lived with the fistula for 30 years and had seven unsuccessful surgeries. I am able to manage the leaking now. I have been married twice and both husbands have passed.

My goals are to start a small business selling Kiondo bags. I learned how to weave Kiondo bags from an organization called Beyond Fistula.

I need $300 to buy supplies - materials from the sisal plant for making the Kiondo bags.

Meeting this need will help me because I feel it has changed my life to have this skill making Kiondo bags. For the first time in a long time I have hope for my future. All I need is help to get started and then I can earn to take care of myself.

Inviolata is a resilient woman. She suffered for three decades with a fistula and through the loss of two husbands, so she is not a stranger to hardship. I watched her light up as she learned in our Kiondo bag weaving workshop - it has given her a belief in herself and hope for the future for the first time in a long time. We will be supporting Inviolata as the gets her small business off the ground.
