Carolyn from Eldoret, Kenya

I want to open a grocery business to support my child and my mother.

With help I can rent a space and buy stock to start my business. This business will give me a way to support my family and stay healthy.

Overview

I am a 30 year old single mother of one and fistula survivor. I am the third born in a family of ten. This year I had a prolonged, obstructed labor that resulted in a fistula, which I lived with for four months before getting surgery at Gynocare Women's and Fistula Hospital. My husband was abusive so I live with my mother who is a widow and also has no source of income.

My goals are to open a grocery business so that I can provide for myself and my child. I cannot do heavy labor because of my injuries and while I recover from fistula surgery, so I must have a business like grocery where I can earn without too much manual labor.

I need $450 to rent a space and purchase inventory for my business.

Meeting this need will help me because I have limited working options because of the abuse I have suffered and my standing as a single mother in society. I want to be independent so that my child and I can be safe.

Carolyn found our programs when she came to Gynocare Women's and Fistula Hospital for treatment. She is a very strong person with a drive to make a good life for her new baby. Her plan is to open a grocery business and earn enough to provide food, clothes, and shelter for herself and her baby. Beyond Fistula will continue to offer her support as needed as she gets her business off the ground.
