Struggling with chronic pain from my disability; Need a bed & walker to move forward

A new bed and a walker will help ease my chronic pain and, ultimately, help me get back to school, function better, and be self-sufficient.

Updates

Niecy wanted to share her thanks: Mar 5, 2014

I would like to thank each person who donated money to me. I am very grateful that they were there to meet my needs. Now that I have the bed, I'm getting plenty of sleep and my bones don't ache while sleeping anymore. I'm looking forward to starting school, and I will be successful! To Benevolent, thank you for having a website where people can go on and reach out to people in need such as myself. And thanks also to my "house specialist" Eleanor, who referred me to Benevolent. I pray that God will continue to use this organization to help people such as myself. May the Lord continue to bless you all.

An update on Niecy's housing! Dec 9, 2013

Eleanor, Niecy's validator, just shared that Niecy will be able to stay in her subsidized housing permanently! She was previously in a two-year transitional housing program, so this is quite a relief for her.

Overview

I'm from Chicago and I live in subsidized housing. I'm most proud of how I've overcome my barriers. I'm happiest when I'm eating good food and something interesting about me is that I have a beautiful smile.

My goal is to go back to school, but I've been limited because of my medical condition.

I need a new bed and a walker. My current situation is that I was donated a futon to be used as a bed, but it broke because it wasn't meant to be used on a daily basis. It hurts my back to sleep in the bed because the mattress is very thin and there's no support. I am currently disabled and have been seeing a doctor regarding back issues, rheumatoid arthritis, and torn ligaments since 2010. I also have chronic pain. As the cold weather approaches, my joints are starting to lock up. It's difficult for me to walk around for a long period of time. My disability case is pending and I'm unable to work, so I don't have any income right now.

Meeting this need will help me because the new bed will decrease the pain I'm experiencing, will help me get a good night's sleep, and help me function better throughout the day. The walker will assist me in moving around and will help me get to my appointments more easily. They will both help ease chronic pain. With less chronic pain, I won't have to schedule as many doctor's appointments, and I will be able to focus on applying to school. I am very grateful that you have taken the time out to read my page and are willing to extend a hand to meet my need.

I met Niecy a year and a half ago, after she finished the Employment Preparation Training program. I think meeting this need is important because Niecy wants to begin looking at schools and obtaining these items will help her focus and go through her day without being in pain. The bed she currently has is causing her a lot of pain and she is in great need of a walker. These two items will help her become more self sufficient. Niecy has a great, optimistic spirit. She is always smiling and tries to make the best out of whatever situation she is in. I know she will go far once she starts school, she just needs a little help in order to get there.
