Patrick from Chicago, IL

I'm moving into my own apartment, but it's empty. Furniture will make it a home.

I can pay rent but can't afford furniture for my new apartment. When I'm housed again, I'll be able to focus on my music career.

Overview

I am a 63 year old man that recently experienced homelessness for the first time in my life last year. I play the bass guitar in a band in Chicago, Kentucky and Wisconsin, and have been doing so for more than 10 years. Presently, things have been very tough for the band and as a result I am only making about $5 a week. Because of my insufficient income, I was no longer able to maintain housing. As a result I found myself needing to revert to a shelter until I got back on my feet. Fortunately, I was recently approved for my social security which is allowing me to secure affordable housing. I am scheduled to move in February 1, 2015.

My goals are to one day finally make it in the music business, at least where I can make an affordable living. In addition, I have a desire to complete a promo demo with the band that we have been working on so we can be better marketed. It is my hope that by this summer we will be playing in places like Navy Pier, weddings and other events and venues.

I need everything for my large studio new apartment. This includes a let-out couch or a twin bed, dishes, a microwave, shower curtains, towels, bed linens, blankets, pillows, a coffee table and possibly an end table, a four drawer dresser, a small kitchen table w/ 3 chairs, pots and pans, and cleaning supplies.

Meeting this need will help me because I am more than ready to start over. Now that I will be getting my social security benefits I will be able to maintain my home, but it would be very helpful if I could get a boost. During my time in the shelter, I did not have enough money to save, therefore as of this day, I have nothing to move into my apartment with.

Patrick came in to this shelter program in October 2014. Upon his arrival I remember him communicating to me that he had no idea what to expect. He shared that he had been couch surfing for several years after loosing his apartment. Patrick shared that his passion was music and that he played in a band for more than 10 years. Now, Patrick is a very small man, so when he told me he played the bass guitar, for a band that played funk, jazz and blues, I didn't think much of it, until a holiday celebration in the shelter. Patrick asked if he and his band could play and I agreed, not really knowing what to expect. Well, I must say, Patrick is an AWESOME bass player! His band played several songs and the other clients did not want them to stop. he should definitely be doing more with his music. In addition, during his time here in the shelter, Patrick, although very quiet has been very adamant about working with me to obtain medical services and to secure his social security benefits, which he has. Patrick has always been very open and honest with me, which has made him very easy to work with. He exhibits himself as a very humble man.
