Overview

I am a homeless veteran that has been staying on the streets for some years now. I found it difficult to stay in shelters because I suffer with high anxiety and PTSD and find it difficult to be around large groups of people. I also find it difficult to trust new people. I started working with the Lincoln Park Community Shelter over a year ago and have established a close working relationship with them. I was able to apply for special housing for veterans and just moved into my own place.

My goals are to see a Doctor and to apply for Disability Benefits. I feel I now have the stability to be able to visit the Doctor and apply for Disability on my path toward securing an income.

I would really appreciate some help with buying some new things for my apartment. I really need a box spring for a mattress, a couch and some cleaning materials, laundry detergent and paper towels and toilet paper. I love my new apartment and I am learning how to live independently again.

Meeting this need will help me because it will make my new apartment feel like a home. If my apartment feels warm and inviting, it will help me to feel grounded and stable and this will have a great impact on my mental health and general well being.

I have been working with Johnny for over a year now and have found that once Johnny has established trust with the people he is working with he is fully committed to working on the issues at hand. We referred Johnny to a housing program for veterans and even though he had some disappointment early on with his housing options falling through, he never gave up hope and communicated excellently with our team throughout the whole process. I have visited Johnny at his new apartment and he is so proud! He said the first morning he woke up, he didn't know where he was and then realized "I am in my own apartment." Johnny also regularly refers others that are sleeping on the streets for services to try to help them. He is especially committed to helping veterans and is proud to have served his country.
