Overview
My name is Elizabeth and I am a 34 year old fistula survivor, a wife, and a mother of four. My children are ages 15, 13, 10, and 6. The birth of my third child was very difficult and left me with a painful fistula. For ten years I couldn’t control my urine or stool. Earlier this year the fistula was repaired by surgery and now I am finally dry and healthy.
My goal is to sell clothes to support my family and pay my children’s school fees. Before, when I had the fistula, I couldn’t contribute to my family’s income very much because I was in pain and ashamed and people didn’t want to be around me because of the smell.
I need funds ($200) to buy merchandise that I will resell to my community. I have learned business skills through a program called Beyond Fistula and I will use them to make a profit selling clothes.
Meeting this need will help me because I have the skills and motivation to move forward with my life and earn income, I am only missing the capital to start my small business. Once I am running my business, I can pay for my children’s school fees and help feed my family.

Elizabeth recently had her long term obstetric fistula repaired at the Gynocare Fistula Center in Eldoret Kenya. She lived with this disabling condition for many years before learning it could be repaired. She has experienced social isolation and was marginalized due to the odor from her fistula. She was introduced to Beyond Fistula after her surgery and attended our business skills seminar. She has a great business plan for buying and reselling clothes in her village. She has the support of our organization and we will be following up with her to ensure her success.
