Naomi from Eldoret, Kenya

I'm ready to work. I need materials to start a bag-making business!

I'm ready to weave traditional Kiondo bags. With supplies to start I can buy the materials and sell the bags and work my way to a stable life!

Overview

I am a 35 year old mother of four, wife, and fistula survivor. I got a fistula in a terrible matatu accident in 2019. I have not been able to find work since then until recently doing a Kiondo bag weaving workshop with an organization called Beyond Fistula. In December 2020 I had a successful surgery to repair the fistula.

My goal is to make and sell the bags to earn income for myself and my children. I owe 380,000 ksh in medical bills from the accident and my children's school fees are 100,000 ksh per year.

I need $400 to purchase materials to make Kiondo bags. I will buy the fibers of the sisal plant and the dyes to make the bags.

Meeting this need will help me because as soon as I get my Kiondo bag business started, I can use my income to pay my hospital bill and pay my children's school fees.

I know Naomi through Beyond Fistula's Kiondo bag weaving workshop. She has immense sadness in her from her accident, and I have seen her work through that as she learned this new skill. Naomi has tenacity to overcome her circumstances and I completely believe in her. Beyond Fistula will be supporting her along the way as she opens her business and gets back on her feet.

About Debra

I founded the nonprofit in 2012 after seeing how much these young Kenyan women needed help rebuilding their lives after recovering from a childbirth injury known as obstetric fistula. I am endlessly motivated by their hope and tenacity… Read more
