John from Chicago, IL

I'm getting my life back on track and I need a new state I.D. card to get started

I was homeless for 2 years & now that I have a home, I'm working towards finding a job & opening a bank account. A new state I.D. is the first step!

Updates

A great update from John's validator, Jackie: Nov 13, 2013

When I told John that someone funded his need for a new state ID in 20 minutes, he was thrilled! He came to the Social Service Center the other day to pick up the proper documents and told me about all the important changes he's making in his life, both big and small. Even though he thinks getting a new ID with his new address is a small change, he knew it was a visible way to show he obtained stable housing and is on his way to achieve even more goals!

Overview

I need a new state identification card. Meeting this need will help me because this is one of the first steps toward employment and getting my drivers license. I am proud of my new residence and I want to update my state ID to show my new home.

My goal is to have a steady job and learn more so I can do bigger and better things. It's time for me to achieve these smaller goals before I can achieve the bigger goals, like obtaining employment, opening a bank account, and living a self-sufficient life.

The most important thing is my family values. I am a loving and caring son, father, and grandfather. I want to show them I am committed to achieving goals, no matter how small or large they are.

My current situation is I recently moved into my own apartment on the Near North side of Chicago after being homeless for two years. I am currently looking for steady employment and volunteer opportunities while I'm trying to get my life back on track. I am very interested in getting back into shipping and receiving work, and anything that allows me to use my hands - construction, janitorial work, etc.

I'm from the West Side of Chicago. I live in my new apartment on the near North side of Chicago.

Something interesting about me is I'm a great motivator and I'm happiest when I'm helping others.

I'm most proud of having a roof over my head and I have a lot of opportunities ahead of me.

We met when John came to the EDSSC looking for emergency clothes and wanting to make a food pantry appointment. John mentioned he recently became housed and was looking to change the address on his ID to reflect his new residence.

I think meeting this need is important because John is very committed to becoming more self-sufficient and overcoming various obstacles. He realizes in order to achieve larger goals such as stable employment, he needs to obtain all the proper documentation, which includes a new state ID. After he fulfills this need, John hopes to apply for a driver's license and seek out both employment and volunteer opportunities.
