Tender from Oakland, CA

I’m a formerly homeless mother of two small children who need warm clothes for winter

We lost a lot of our clothes and belongings while homeless. I’m hoping to keep my children warm and healthy during the winter.

Overview

I need winter clothing for my son and daughter. This includes jackets, sweaters, pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes, gloves, hats and socks.

My goal is to have my children taken care of the way that they should so that I can focus on establishing a better education for myself. I can also use other resources to buy food and transportation if I don't have to worry about figuring out how I am going to clothe my children during the winter.

My current situation is that I just recently moved into transitional housing but have lost a lot of clothing and items for myself and my children from having been homeless. My kids and I take public transportation to get to school and appointments and the weather is starting to get colder.

Meeting this need will help me because it will give my children warm clothing to wear and I won't have to worry about them being dressed appropriately for the weather. It will also mean that I can be comfortable with taking them on public transportation during the cold season and hopefully prevent them from getting sick.

I am currently working on obtaining my GED and possibly pursuing some employment goals of getting into the childcare and eldercare field. I have been thankful for all the help that I have received and hope that I can pay it forward in the future.

I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area, and I live in Oakland. Something interesting about me is that I can sing but I am shy. I'm happiest when I do things on my own and complete them. I'm most proud of the path I am taking right now to better my life and the lives of my children.

I have two children, a boy and girl. My children have been the rock for me in accomplishing the things I want. My son is smart and has already shown the great man that he will be. My daughter is bright and curious which makes for an adventurous day!

I am hard working and strive to be the best that I can. Unfortunately, I have experienced trauma in my life that has hardened my soul. Yet, I have stayed resilient and positive about life and my future.

We met when Tender applied for transitional housing for parents about two months ago. I meet with Tender weekly to work on case management: employment, education, mental health, family planning, and permanancy.

I think meeting this need is important because Tender has been homeless and moved from place to place. She has lost a lot of her items, including things that were sentimental for herself and her kids. If she received warm clothing for her children, this would help her be less stressed about being a parent and providing for her children. It would also help Tender focus on educating herself and being a better mother to her young children.

Tender has made tremendous strides to better her life and current situation. Since working with her for only two months, she has already completed a employment program, signed of for childcare for her children, registered for a GED program, and started obtaining therapy. She is on the right track to one day living on her own successfully.
