Peter from Chicago, IL

I'm a veteran & I was just accepted into a rehousing program; I need furniture!

Recently, I found both a job & housing! To be productive at work, I need to sleep & eat well. Thus, I need help with small furniture & kitchen items.

Updates

Peter shared some great news! Jan 14, 2014

Thank you for allowing the funding for the futon - this allows me to sleep well. This organization is helping me to rebuild my life and regaining important focus in housing, jobs, and building new friendships.

Peter's received his new futon! Dec 30, 2013

Chicago Lights just let us know that Peter's received his new futon, which he'll use as both a couch and a bed. He was also able to get a good quality stock pot to cook in.

Peter was volunteering at our soup kitchen when he got the email saying his need had been funded. We were both so excited! What a perfect Christmas present and perfect way to end such a life changing year for Peter. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Overview

I need small furniture and kitchen items. This includes a futon (to be used as a bed and a couch) and basic kitchen utensils so I can start preparing meals for myself.

Meeting this need will help me because I recently got a new job and I am very excited about starting the new position. In order to be productive at work I need to get a good night's sleep and begin eating healthy and balanced meals. In order to do so I need something to sleep on and kitchen items to cook with.

My goal is to become self sufficient again. I really want to be a contributing member of society and being able to support myself financially will be the first step in meeting this goal.

My current situation is that I was living on the streets and then was accepted into a shelter program. Soon after I started living at the shelter I was connected to a rapid rehousing program and was accepted. I started a new job last week and will move into my new apartment in the next few days. Because of my time without a home, I only have clothing.

I've recently begun volunteering at Chicago Lights - Elam Davies Social Service Center. It's been really great being able to give back to the organization that has helped me.

I'm from Chicago, IL. I currently live in a homeless shelter but was recently accepted into a rapid rehousing program and will be moving into my new apartment soon!

Something interesting about me is that I can speak 3 languages fluently. I'm most proud of my military service and I'm happiest when I'm spending time with loved ones.

Need funded!

I met Peter when his friend, who was receiving services at the time, brought him into the agency. He expressed interest in case management services and help with housing. We were able to get him into a homeless shelter program. During this time, he also secured a full-time employment position and has been connected to a rapid rehousing program. For the last two months he has also volunteered at our soup kitchen.

I think meeting this need is important because Peter is well on his way to becoming self sufficient again! He has show such determination in finding a job, and was fortunately selected for a rapid rehousing program. He is just a few days away from moving into a studio apartment but doesn't own anything beyond basic clothing. Peter really wants to make this new apartment a home and be able to get good rest and prepare meals. Having a futon to sleep on and basic kitchen utensils will help him in reaching these goals!

He is extremely motivated - and when he sets his mind on something he works incredibly hard to make sure he reaches his goals.
