Brahan from San Jose, CA

I am a refugee and expecting my first child. I need a bed, crib, and baby items.

I currently sleep on a mattress on the floor with several roommates. These items will make caring for my new baby easier.

Overview

I need a bed, crib, and baby clothes. This includes getting ready for the newborn baby and household items that would accommodate my disability.

Meeting this need will help me because be more self sufficient in caring for my baby and help with my daily chores. The bed will help me have a better sleep and decrease pain on my leg.

My goal is to allow me prepare for the birth of my baby and be able to sleep well and allow me to be able to care for my baby as well.

My current situation is that I am sleeping on a mattress on the floor, which causes pain in my leg and knee. I have difficulty getting out of bed. I am currently living in a two bedroom apartment with five other roommates. Due to my disability (missing left arm) I have difficulty doing household chores.

If I get this help, I will have less burden on me and my life would be much easier.

I'm from Eritrea and I came to the U.S as a refugee in May of 2013. I live in Santa Clara, CA. Something interesting about me is that I love reading the Bible and want to pursue Bible school. I'm happiest when I read my bible, and when I found out I was pregnant, and that I came to the U.S. I have a desire to help and look forward to being able to help others.

I am glad to be able to come to the United States and hope that one day I can attend school and help others in need. I want to study in Social Work. When I first came to the United States I was in really bad shape. I am glad I have the support from the agency to help me with resources and support.

We met when she was referred to our center for services. At the time, Brahan was in severe distress and anxiety. She was in tears and has been seeking services, but due to limited English language capacity, she was isolating herself and from her community.

I think meeting this need is important because she will be able to improve on her sleep and not have to sleep on the floor anymore. Also since she is pregnant, any assistance will help her be more self sufficient to care for her child.

She is currently 9 months pregnant, with her first child. She lacks support from her community. She is currently in the United States alone without any family. She had lost her father at the age of five due to an aircraft bombing. At that time, she also lost her left arm which resulted in amputation.
