Lawanda from Detroit, MI

I have my own place now! A bed will help relieve knee pain from sleeping on floor

A bed and dresser will keep me from bending over all the time and will provide relief to my knee pain which limits my ability to move at times.

Lawanda received her bed! Sep 24, 2014

Celia from the Coalition On Temporary Shelter sent us an update on Lawanda:

She says, "Lawanda received her queen size bed and is now able to sleep comfortably. Words cannot express the joy on her face when her bed arrived. Thank you Benevolent donors!"

Overview

I am a resident of Detroit. I love fishing and am happiest when I can do so. My current situation is I was homeless but now I have a place to stay. My mobility is limited and I am in need of knee surgery on both my knees. Because of my limited mobility I have had difficulty finding employment.

My goal is to find a job that can accommodate my mobility limitations or get knee surgery to help reduce the pain. Until then being able to rest at night without pain would help make my life so much better.

I am in need of a bed to help reduce pain and aggravation in my knees caused by constant bending and kneeling to lay down and pick up clothes from floor.

Meeting this need will help me because I am currently sleeping on an air mattress. It is really hard for me to get on my air mattress at night and get up from it in the morning due to my knee problems. A new bed and place to store my clothes will help relieve pain associated with bending low to pick up things close to the floor and kneeling to lay on my air mattress at night.

I met Lawanda about 2 months ago. She was living at the Salvation Army Denby Center and was referred to me for Permanent Supportive Housing. I think meeting this need is important because Lawanda is very ill. She has a need for two knee replacements as well as other physical issues. I believe a lot of her health issues come from her inability to rest comfortably on a day to day basis. A comfortable bed right away will give her the opportunity to rest her body and most importantly her knees at night!
