Warren from Chicago, IL

My goal is to be a welder & build a career. Welding gear will get me there!

This gear will help employers take me seriously as a welder. I'll be able to pass welding tests and get the job that will start my new career.

I need welding gear for my job search. This includes steel-toed boots, a welding helmet, a welding jacket and sleeves, welding gloves, and an eye exam. Meeting this need will help me because this gear will help potential employers take me seriously as a welder. I have been working hard in class to earn my certificates and want to have the gear I need to prove I am serious about this career. My goal is to become a full-time welder and to maintain a career in manufacturing. I will know when I'm on interviews that I have the gear necessary to do the work and will be confident while I'm doing weld-tests.

My current situation is that I came to JARC referred from another agency in Chicago. After I finished high school, I worked a couple of odd jobs in customer service and went to college for a year, but it felt it wasn't going anywhere. I wanted a new start and to be able to prove to myself and my old friends that something more is out there and that it's important to consider ways to broaden our horizons.

It will feel like my first Christmas to have this need met. It will feel like I can know other people are supporting me while I look for employment and that I have supporters in a time of need.

I live in Chicago. Something interesting about me is that I like to read, work out, and play basketball. I am a people person, with a good sense of humor and a friendly personality. I'm happiest when I am hanging out and working with good people who lift me up. I'm most proud of that I get over every and any obstacle that's been in my life. Also I am a hard worker and I never stop until my goal is reached. I'm not afraid of failure because failure can teach me how to get to perfection. I live with my mom and my dad. I don't even think words can explain how important this would be to my family and to me. It's time for me to be able to move out on my own and provide for not just myself but also my family.

We met when I interviewed Warren for the welding program. I was struck by his enthusiasm for the career and for learning new things. He was confident in his math ability and felt that it would be very applicable for his new career. I see him almost every day in class. Warren has an excellent attendance record and has not missed a single class.

I think meeting this need is important because Warren is of the age where he wants to start moving away from odd jobs and more towards a career to help his family. He felt that college was not for him because of financial reasons, but I think it is so important that he went and found another career in our welding program that he could still earn a living wage and build a career. Warren wants to help his parents now that they are getting older and I love his enthusiasm for making sure his parents are taken care of.

Warren has accelerated through our program very quickly. He started the first week of January after the holidays and has already earned 3 of the 4 credentials he needs to graduate. He has started taking written diagnostics for his final welding exam--in about 10 weeks. Our program normally runs 14 weeks and I am so excited to see him go through the material so quickly. Warren has a great sense of humor and gets along well with his classmates.
