Ebony from Evanston, IL

Moving to a safe & stable place for my children. Need help with the security deposit.

I've secured a housing voucher, after months of homelessness. With the deposit, my family can move to a safer place as I work to become a nurse.

Updates

Ebony's in her new home & her new furniture will be delivered today! Dec 8, 2014

The housing program Ebony got into covered her security deposit, so she was able to buy extra furniture for her new home. She is so thrilled to have a place and to have beds for the kids to sleep in! The beds are being delivered today and it will be the kids' first night sleeping in their own beds in their own apartment in almost a year, so you can imagine how happy the whole family is.

Ebony's accepted into a local housing program! Oct 8, 2014

We are happy to report that Ebony and her family have been accepted into a housing program here in the Chicago area. Ebony is very pleased to not have to move several states away in order to provide her family with stable housing! She will still need to place a deposit on the apartment and furnish it as well, so your continued support is much appreciated!

Overview

I am a single mother of two young children. I am on the path to becoming a nurse and am working more than 40 hours a week to make ends meet for my family.

My goals are to move to a small community in Minnesota in order to provide a safe and stable environment for my children to grow up in. There, I will also be able to complete my nursing degree and further my career goals.

I need the money for the deposit on a subsidized apartment in Minnesota. I have already been through the long process of obtaining a housing voucher and finding an apartment that meets my family's needs and accepts the voucher. Now I just need to secure the apartment with a deposit until we can get to Minnesota.

Meeting this need will help me because I have been trying to complete this move for months now and have been unable to, due to lack of housing options and funds. I cannot afford housing in the area we currently live in, and my children and I have been homeless for 3 months.

I have know Ebony for about a year through our work together at the Infant Welfare Society of Evanston. She is a remarkably driven young woman who is dedicated to being the best mother that she can be. Ebony has been working on moving out of the Chicagoland area for almost a year now, and is very excited about the potential of a move to Minnesota. She hopes that the small town environment will provide her family with the stability and peaceful lifestyle that have been lacking in their lives as homeless people in Chicago.
