Updates

There's been a change in Loredana's situation Dec 9, 2014

Loredana is currently working full-time as a service provider for people with disabilities. She is still planning on a career in welding but some things in her life have changed. Loredana needs to use the funds raised through Benevolent to hire a lawyer who is working to help her clear barriers to her welding employment. JARC (Jessica!) continues to work with Loredana to support her needs in this time of transition. We will continue to post updates on Loredana's situation as things change. Thank you to everyone who supported her!

Overview

I'm a woman moving towards a career in a non-traditional field. I'm from Romania and was adopted. I grew up with a nice family, but after I left home and got married, I started a family of my own. 4-5 years later, I got divorced and recently I moved to Chicago. Now I'm living in a shelter with my baby, doing welding program in order to get a job. I'm happiest spending time with my 3 kids on my days off. I am most proud of my kids for being strong and for all of the steps I had to take in my life. My kids are 4, 6, and 4 months old. My kids are my world. To be able to bring them home with me and their baby brother, because I have a job and my own gear, would mean a lot to us.

My goals are to bring all my kids to live with me once I have found a job. I have enjoyed learning in a non-traditional environment and worked very hard to get my math scores up to get into the welding program.

I need welding gear, including a helmet, steel toe boots, welding jacket, and sleeves.

Meeting this need will help me because it is hard to be taken seriously as a woman in manufacturing. Employers will see my commitment and I know I will move up quickly with my motivation and skills.

Loredana came to JARC because of a relationship I have with the shelter she has been staying at. I taught a sewing class there and had talked about the welding training program. Although her math scores were low, I asked if she would like to do tutoring simultaneously with the welding training program. I let her know how long the days would be but she was committed and worked her way through the tutoring in 7 weeks. Our math instructor was very impressed with her commitment to bringing her scores up. I am excited for her to move forward from the program to full-time employment.
