Pumpkin from Detroit, MI

Fled neighborhood violence to keep my kids safe. Beds will ensure they feel secure.

I want to keep my family safe & be a strong role model for my kids. Beds will allow them to get rest so they can be productive this school year.

Overview

I am a 36-year-old mother with 7 children to support. Recently, we were forced to leave our home because of the violence in the neighborhood. When our home was shot at while me and my children were inside, I knew that it was time to go.

I want to keep my family safe and be a strong role model for my children. I have been taking classes at Wayne County Community College since 2012. My goal is to get an Associates degree and work with children in the elementary school system. This would allow me to better support my family.

We had to leave almost all of our belongings behind due to the violence. I need a bunk bed and a twin bed for my younger children.

Meeting this need will help me because my children are sleeping on mats that were donated to us for the time being. I want my children to be able to get a get a good nights sleep so that they can be productive in school this coming fall.

I have been working with Pumpkin and her family through their participation in our Family Resiliency Program. Pumpkin is a very determined woman who instills values in her children. The recent act of violence that has caused them to lose all of their belongings was a setback but not a deterrent to moving forward. They are now in a new home that's located in a quiet and safe neighborhood.
