Overview
I am from West Africa, and I have been in the United States for a year and half. I came here because I wasn't safe and I was tortured in my country. I am seeking asyIum, and have been going to school for one year while I wait for my work permit. I am a hardworker and a go-getter, and I hope to help others in the future.
My goals are to complete my school program in automotive technology and pass my certification. I want to work in the auto industry, and someday I want to own my own company to help other people that are in my situation. I hope I can share my past with others to help them and give them a hand to stand.
I need a laptop and printer to help me complete my school assignments, complete my online classes, and to study with the appropriate program for my certification exam.
Meeting this need will help me to be able to complete my school program, and to rebuild my life. I've been in school for one year without a laptop and it's been difficult. Sometimes I can't complete assignments on time or access my online classes because the library is closing by the time I leave class. Having a laptop and printer will help me complete my classes.

I have known John for almost one year and have been providing him with mental health and case management services. I saw that John was a "go-getter", as he calls himself, when I first met him. He enrolled in school quickly, and has been working on taking classes towards an automotive technology degree since the first day we met.
I think meeting this need is important because it will help John to complete his school courses, and to move into employment in the future. I was astonished to hear from John that he had been taking online classes without a computer. That seemed like quite the challenge to me! John was humble in keeping this need to himself, and was resourceful in using the library to complete his assignments. However, it has been challenging to keep up with his work and John's teachers have said he is a dedicated student, but is falling behind without the technology.
John is a kind person, who is dedicated to helping others. Despite the many barriers he encountered on his journey to escape torture, John continues to move forward and stay connected to his value of helping others by planning to one day employ others who have experienced difficult times. Receiving the funding for this laptop and printer will allow John to complete his school assignments and online courses, and study for his certification exam. It will also be helpful for his future employment.
