Desiree from Evanston, IL

I'm a single, working mom. A laptop will enable me to be a good student & parent!

At work & school for 60 hrs/wk so every minute with my daughter is precious. A laptop enables me to be home for dinner & finish my homework at night.

Desiree has achieved her goals and then some Apr 26, 2016

Desiree recently enrolled in and completed a job training program that provided graduates with a laptop. She was thrilled to have this need met and to be able to use the Benevolent funds to help furnish her new apartment. Before her need was met, she slept several moths sleeping on an air mattress. But thanks to her Benevolent donors, Desiree was able to buy a new bed and some household items. Desiree and her daughter are very grateful to be settled into a home!

Overview

I am a single mother working full time while finishing my degree at community college. I had my daughter while I was still a teenager, and have managed to stay in school and employed throughout the two years since she was born.

My goals are to finish my Associate's Degree and continue on to a 4 year college for a degree in Nursing. I am also working on enrolling in housing programs and securing an apartment for my daughter and me, as we currently live with my mother.

I need a laptop so that I am able to do my homework from home instead of the school library. I spend about 60 hours a week working and in class, so every minute I can be at home with my daughter is precious. A laptop would allow me to be home for dinner and bedtime and return to my homework once my baby is in bed.

Meeting this need will help me because it will allow me to be the best parent possible to my daughter without hindering my education. The early years are important for many reasons, and I would love to be able to be with her more while continuing my education.

I have been working with Desiree for over a year. She voluntarily joined our Family Support Program in order to learn more about child development to be better equipped to support her daughter's healthy growth and development. She is very responsible and never misses a meeting despite working and being in school full time. She has a great drive to complete her education and obtain work in healthcare, and has very valid concerns about spending too much time away from her young daughter in the process. It would make a huge difference in both of their lives if she could do homework from home instead of at the school library miles from their apartment.
