Flower from San Jose, CA

I'm a recent arrival from Eritrea and need a sewing machine to help me be independent

I am learning English and sewing, and hope to be able to support myself and take care of my children with the a sewing machine.

Thank you from Flower Feb 4, 2014

We have received this note from Flower:

I would like to thank you for everything that you have done for me and my family. All the trouble that you had to go through to better my life in America will not go in vain and I will use the sewing machine to better myself and my family. I sincerely would like to thank you again, and I forever will remember your help.

I need a sewing machine and materials (threads and needles). Meeting this need will help me because I am learning sewing now, and having the machine will help me to craft clothes that in the future I can sell.

I am improving myself, learning sewing. I appreciate any help anybody can give to help improve my life.

My current situation is I am a new arrival, learning English and sewing skills. There are six of us in a two bedroom apartment in order to pay the rent. We have food stamps and other food resources, but once rent and utilities are paid there is not much more.

My goal is to help my children to finish school, and then to use the sewing machine to help me be independent and take care of myself. I want for my children to be like flowers in this new country.

I'm from Eritrea and I live in rented apartment with five of my children. I enjoy my sewing and ESL classes. I'm happiest when I have the resources to take care of my children and family. I'm most proud of my beautiful children.

I have children in school, they are very nice children, but they need so much more than I am able to provide for them now. I am very protective of my children, and they try to help me too.

We met when Flower came to AACI's Center for Survivors of Turture for assistance that we are able to provide to new refugee arrivals. I think meeting this need is important because the client will be empowered and will have hope for the future. Her goal is to use sewing skill and become productive in the society. She is very motivated to learn English and new sewing skills. She is family oriented.
