Johnny wants to say "Thank you!" Jun 9, 2014
Johnny says, "Words cannot express how grateful I am. My children and grandchildren are coming to visit me from Alabama next month, so being able to have my lights back on will allow them to enjoy their first visit to Chicago. This wasn't just about paying my electric bill, it allows my family to visit me after not seeing them for several years!"
Overview
I am a 53-year-old father and grandfather who is dealing with a lot of health concerns. I was fortunate enough to get a Section 8 apartment four years ago after being homeless for 10 years. I appreciate all the assistance I've received from various agencies, and I'm trying my best to maintain what I've accomplished so far.
My goals are to maintain my housing, which I love, and seek gainful part-time employment.
I need help covering a portion of my electric bill. Recently, I had some unforeseen expenses set me back and this one-time help will prevent me from falling behind. I sought out assistance from a lot of agencies and was fortunate to get help from CEDA (Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County) for most of the bill, but I still need to pay the last portion.
Meeting this need will help me because I want to follow all the requirements of the Section 8 Housing guidelines and maintain my lease. I love my apartment, always pay my rent on time and I'm doing everything I can to make sure I take care of my home.

Johnny has been a guest of the EDSSC since 2008 and would often come in for emergency food or clothing. However, he has not been to the Center for a few years since he received Section 8 Housing through another social service agency.
Johnny came to the EDSSC this week having looked for utility assistance elsewhere, and had all the proper documentation showing he would have a large portion of his electric bill covered if he could provide some funds as well.
Johnny receives disability benefits, so this assistance would be greatly appreciated due to his limited income. By paying his bills and maintaining his housing, Johnny hopes to look for part-time employment and give back to the community as a volunteer.
