JT from Chicago, IL

I'm a single dad, trained + ready to work. Need the right gear to work in my field.

I just finished a training in welding and the safety equipment is required before I work.

Updates

Thanks from JT Jan 22, 2013

I would like to send my appreciation and gratitude to everyone who assisted me in reaching my needed goal. I am currently searching for a welding job and hope to find one soon. I am hoping that the equipment that I received will help further my chances in finding job opportunities. Once again, I would like to thank everyone who donated and helped. I will be looking forward to putting all that I have received to good use. I know truly that myself and my family will benefit greatly from what you all have bestowed upon me.

Overview

I need welding gear to start my job. This includes: auto strike helmet, flame retardant weld jacket, gauntlet style weld gloves, metatarsal safety boots, and a head cover beanie.

Right now, my biggest challenge is I'm gaining work skills that I need, but I don't have the right equipment. This means when I am hired, I can't start work. Meeting this need will help me achieve future goals because once I have the equipment to start a job, that will allow me to earn money to find a home for me and my son.

My current situation is I'm training to be a welder in a program that allows for job placement. My problem is that, upon being placed in a job, I won't have the equipment I need to start. Meeting this need will help me because I am really eager to work. Upon restarting work I will therefore be a more consistent provider for my family. My personal goal is to become a certified welder and potentially be settled into a career.

I turned my life around and I want to start working to help ease my financial difficulties. This will also allow me to start a stronger foundation for my children's future. It will also allow me to give back to my mother and help her with my nieces and their financial struggles. I think of myself mostly as a strong provider, who through these tough economic times, has lost my edge and a slight grip on my finances. Which seems to effect my parenting skills towards my children. Being a single father is extremely stressful when I can't provide the things that my children need. I live with my mother, my son, and my two nieces. My mother takes care of the bills and I live rent free, but I have to provide and prepare meals for me and my son. I'm most proud of my children. My son just started second grade and my daughter has just begun her first year of preschool. They seem to look up to me for everything, and even when I can't provide, they still look to me as the best dad in the world. I went to school at Kennedy King College, where I received Phi Theta Kappa National Honors. I've worked at jobs including moving companies, manufacturing warehouses, and doing landscaping. Something interesting about me is I used to tutor students in math and reading at Kennedy King.

I have known JT for about 5 weeks. He is a trainee of mine in the welding program.

I think meeting his need is important because in the welding industry, personal protective equipment is needed to protect the welder from hazards associated with welding and injury to self and possibly others. After going through the welding programs, our students get placed in jobs with our partner companies, but they cannot start work until they have their own gear.

This will move the recipient's life forward by allowing him to start a career that's both challenging and rewarding. JT is a dedicated worker and has a professional demeanor. Once he starts his welding career, he will be able to financially support himself and his son.

It is clear from his demeanor that he enjoys welding very much. JT has great potential for a long career in the industry.
