Charlize

Charlize from Chicago, IL

From homelessness to graphic design school. Need a laptop and graphics software to make it.

In the past year I went from living in a shelter to getting back onto my own two feet. I'm ready for school and a career that'll support my family.

Overview

My current situation is that I am going back to school for Graphic and Web Design and I need a laptop computer with a Wacom pad in order to complete the work required for classes. It is currently difficult for me to pay for this because I am unemployed.

Having this need met will mean being able to fulfill the class requirements and move toward my goals of stabilization through employment. I will be able to focus on my classes instead of worrying how to complete the assignments and future work I will receive.

Once the need is met, I will be able to move forward with my education, graduation, acquire work and become a stable person. This would also allow me to assist my family more and place me above the low income mark.

The fulfillment of my need would be a benefit to my immediate family members as well as me. The stress in taking care of me and family would dissipate. I would be able to focus and move through life easier.

Late last year, I had left Chicago to accept a full-time position that did not materialize. During this process, I had left my part-time job, my apartment and family for a better opportunity to help us all. The cost I experienced drained me on many levels, emotionally and physically. My property was either given away or destroyed, my cat no longer lives with me, I was staying at a shelter for about three months and it is difficult to financially give to my aging parents with temp work that seems to only open up every two months.

I decided not to let this get me down and move forward to better my situation by returning to school. After speaking with numerous graphic/web designers and researching products required for class, I found the best set-up for success would require a laptop that can handle the load and software needed to engage in this type of work along with a Wacom pad. Fortunately, I have been able to register for the classes and am working with a team of very understanding individuals who are doing their best to point me in the right direction. In the meantime, I have engaged in temp work, signed up to work the upcoming elections, working with an employment coach and have been submitting my resume to prospective employers since my return to Chicago.

Right now, my biggest challenge is that neither of my parents can assist me due to being low income themselves. So I decided to go into a field I would enjoy and make a good living to stabilize myself while assisting my parents.

I think of myself mostly as a humanitarian. I donate a lot of my time to help others regardless of my current situation. I volunteer for two non-for–profits that assist children, teenagers, adults, and seniors.

I'm most proud of having the courage to move forward in life, give to others and better myself.

I've worked at jobs including Consumer Advocate, IT Project Manager Intern, and Legal Assistant.

Something interesting about me is I have flown a Cessna Plane.

I put into motion what I say I will do and follow through till the end.

I have known Charlize since she came to JARC to get help finding a job a month ago. I think meeting this need is important because it will enable her to start a profitable career path. She will be able to take graphic design classes that she can use in combination with her technical background to find a project manager position. This will move Charlize's life forward by giving her the skills she needs to find employment she can use to support herself and her parents.
