Andrea from Chicago, IL

I'm helping my daughter recover from abuse and I need a bed for her and a crib for my son

I didn't work for 8 months because I was helping my 8-year-old heal from sexual abuse. Now I'm working again but can't afford beds for my children.

Overview

I need a baby crib for my son and a bed for my daughter, with mattresses.

My current situation is that I just started working after not working for 8 months because I have been helping my daughter heal from the sexual abuse she suffered. She is now in therapy and enjoys it very much. During this time, I was not able to purchase a crib for my newborn son or a bed for my daughter and I would like for him and my daughter to feel comfortable at home with me.

Meeting this need will help me because my son and my daughter will no longer be sleeping in the bed with me. I am aware that newborn children are more likely to die from SIDS and I just want to be able to prevent that from happening. Meeting this need will help me because it will give my daughter an opportunity to feel more independent and comfortable at home.

My goal is to provide a better life for my children. I would also like for my daughter to heal from the trauma she went through and being able to have her own bed will get her closer to healing.

My daughter has been through so much in the past year and I would like for her to have something that she's been wanting for such a long time which is to have her own bed. I know that having a bed will help my daughter feel like she is more independent and will help my son not be at risk of being affected by SIDS.

I'm from Mexico and I moved to Chicago ten years ago. I live with my mother and sisters. I'm happiest when it's summer because I can take my children out to play.

I have one daughter and one son. They are everything to me! My daughter will be starting third grade and she's so excited for school. My son is 4 months old and he is just a happy baby. I am separated from my son's father because he sexually abused my daughter. Sometimes it is very difficult for me to process everything that happened but my children are the reason why I keep going.

I'm most proud of my daughter. She's 8 and although she was sexually abused, she has never given up and enjoys attending therapy.

Something interesting about me is that I love Mexican food.

We met when Andrea was referred to me by her daughter's therapist about 2 months ago. Andrea and I have met every single week when she brings her daughter to therapy at the center to discuss her needs.

I think meeting this need is important because her children do not have their own beds and are sleeping with Andrea in her bed. Having beds will help Andrea's children become more independent.

Andrea is very consistent with her daughter's therapy appointments. She is a single mother who is doing everything possible to provide a better future for her children and is very committed to her daughter's healing process. I enjoy working with her because even though she has her own struggles, she always has a positive outlook on things.
