Jose

Jose from Chicago, Illinois

The bike I used every day broke, and I can't afford a replacement on my own.

I don't have a source of income & my bike has been essential. W/ a new one I can get food, get to my appointments, and to meet with my case manager.

Overview

I am a 79 year old man with a long history of dealing with medical issues, including cancer and diabetes. My bicycle is my only means of transportation because I have no income and am not eligible for benefits like the free ride pass. For my survival, I depend on food from food pantries, which I travel to on my bicycle. I also use my bicycle to get to my medical appointments and to meet with my case manager.

Recently, the bicycle I have used for many years has broken down. I have had this bicycle repaired many times, but I have been told it is time to replace it as it cannot be safely ridden anymore.

I am asking for help in purchasing a new bicycle that will last me for many years and help me to go to food pantries, attend medical appointments, and get to meetings with my case manager.

Having a bicycle means I am able to do the things I need to stay healthy and safe. It also helps me stay connected to other people who I also try to help and support. Sharing is growing.

Jose has been working with North Side Housing and Supportive Services since 2010 and we have personally been working together since October 2018. He is always generous with his time and willing to help and support others with no expectations of others. I have witnessed the challenges that he has faced accessing services (food, medical, and case management) and know how much he relies on a bike to get around.

About Anna

I am a permanent supportive housing case manager with North Side Housing and Supportive Services. I work alongside formerly homeless adults now living independently in subsidized housing and support them in pursuing their goals.
