PJai from Detroit, MI

Moving into my own place! I need a stove & fridge to cook for my family.

I'm ready to move into a home of my own. I've found a place but there are no appliances. A stove and fridge will allow my family to move in.

PJai's recent successes Jun 2, 2014

Pjai's validator reported that Pjai was able to secure a refrigerator and stove from her church and was able to move into her new place and out of COTS' supportive housing program. As a result of PJai's successes the funding donated for her need was redirected to help Ms. Taylor.

Ms. Taylor is 53 years old and entered into the COTS Shelter Plus Care housing program in 1999. She is very proud that she has maintained her sobriety for about 6 years now. Due to physical limitations she is unable to work a full-time job. To stay active and produce income, however, Ms. Taylor does odd jobs here and there in her community. These past few years, Ms. Taylor has reconnected with her children and has established a loving relationship with her grandchildren. Recently Ms. Taylor was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and has been sleeping on a single, worn-out mattress on her bedroom floor. She says that as a result of her sleeping arrangements, she suffers from back pain often.

To support Ms. Taylor COTS purchased her a mattress, box spring and bed frame. She was overjoyed and can now sleep comfortably and wake up ready to assist other older adults who reside in her apartment complex - which she loves to do.

Overview

Hi my name is PJai and I am from Detroit. Something interesting about me is that I used to be a school teacher. I am happiest when I am worshipping God and am most proud of my children and grandchild. I have a daughter that just graduated college and is looking for a job. I have a son that graduates in May.

My goal is to overcome my mental illness and start a new career where I can be healthy and support myself and my family.

I used to be a school teacher but had a mental breakdown of sorts and was extremely depressed for a long while. This depression was coupled with anxiety stress syndrome and panic attacks.

I am now unemployed and am in the assisted housing program at COTS. I just received my section 8 voucher but cannot find a place that comes with appliances. This had delayed my moving because I cannot care for myself or family without appliances. Meeting this need will help me because it will be a load lifted. Knowing that wherever I move I'll have a stove and refrigerator would be a huge stress relief.

I met PJai when she became a participant in the supportive housing program at COTS. This program is designed to assist homeless individuals with becoming self sufficient.

I think meeting this need is important because Pjai it will help alleviate stress in Pjai's life. A stove and fridge will all her to safely store food and cook her meals for her family, which is really important to her.  Without a stove and refridegerator she will not be able to keep up with the healthy eating she needs and plays a role in her mental health.
