Mike from Chicago, IL

On my path out of homelessness. Court fees are holding me back from getting there.

Once this is paid, I can begin putting aside money to save for an apartment.

My need and situation

I am currently a resident of Lincoln Park Community Shelter, where I am working on becoming self-sufficient once again by obtaining permanent employment and housing. I have been a resident here for about 9 months.

My goals are to obtain permanent housing and employment as a mail-room clerk. In my own home, I would better be able to pursue my artistic hobbies of painting and drawing.

I need to pay off my court fees by January, 2017. My probationary period is reliant on this payment and if I am able to pay it all by January, my probation will end sooner and I can continue working on my goals. I am also seeking a one-month Chicago Transit Authority pass so that I can have reliable transportation.

Paying these court fees on time means that I will be in compliance with my probation requirements. Additionally, once this is paid, I can begin putting aside money to save for an apartment. The CTA pass allows me to get to and from job interviews, court dates, and all other daily necessities.

Mike has been working with Center for Changing Lives for almost a year. He works consistently with his coaches on his employment, financial and housing goals. He has been applying and interviewing for jobs and we are excited to see him land one! These court fees are a barrier that he has been steadily overcoming and funding this need will be the final thing to put it behind him.
