Overview

I am a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate for a teenager in foster care. I have known this youth for the past two years and have been by her side as she has attended 5 different schools in 4 different cities.

My goals are to support my youth in her education through tutoring services. After nearly a year and a half of living on the streets and moving in and out of different school districts (therefore experiencing considerable lapses in education), my primary goal is for her to graduate with her peers at the end of this year. At this point, graduation will only be possible if she receives tutoring and begins to feel confident in her education abilities.

I need to raise funds for a private tutor because neither her school district nor the social services agency can provide support beyond access to a program on a computer. Considering the current state of her grades and the amount of school she has missed, a dedicated tutor is necessary for her to catch up with her peers.

Meeting this need will help her continue her education and move closer to graduating high school. Most importantly, this will help her feel confident in her ability to read, write and learn alongside her peers. She is very intelligent and wants to succeed in her education but is experiencing many roadblocks — the main one being the lack of funds for a tutor. She has expressed to me that she wants to participate in her graduation this June, but is worried she won't be able to because of her grades. Receiving these funds will help tremendously!

I have been working with Hannah as her Case Supervisor at CASA for almost 7 months. Hannah is an especially incredible CASA! When Hannah began working with this youth, the youth was constantly going AWOL for days or weeks at a time. Because of Hannah's involvement on the case, the youth has maintained living placements for longer periods of time, engaged in school, accessed amazing extra-curricular opportunities, and had more visits with family members. Hannah goes above and beyond what is expected of a CASA and the strides her youth has made are a real testament to Hannah's impact! Hannah is currently seeking funding for tutoring, a need whose importance cannot be understated given the amount of school her youth as missed, due to circumstances beyond her control.
