Pat from Chicago, IL

I'm a mother ready to take the GED and all I need is the registration fee!

My kids promised me that they would give me their high school diplomas, and they did. Now it's time for me to give that promise back!

Overview

I need money so that I can take the GED. This request includes the registration costs for all of the subjects on the test.

Meeting this need will help me because I made my kids promise me that they would give me their high school diplomas, and they did. Now it's time for me to give that back to them. This will change my life.

My goal is to explore new jobs and have more opportunities by passing the test. I have been attending prep classes at city colleges for the past few months so that I am ready to go.

My current situation is that I am in a job-readiness nonprofit. I have been on a janitorial internship in the past few months, and am waiting on the perfect job opportunity just for me. I know that having my GED will give me more options.

I'm from Chicago and I live on the South Side.

I had two children - one, my daughter, is still with us. I think about my son every single day.

Something interesting about me is that I'm a very happy person. I have been through a lot, but I stay positive. I'm happiest when I'm playing with my grandkids.

Pat and I met when she enrolled in The Cara Program in June of 2013. Since starting the program, she has worked hard to enroll in GED classes part-time and take on beneficial internships. Pat has proven herself to be a diligent worker.

I think meeting this need is important because Pat has nowhere else to pull funds from right now. She lives with her daughter who is supporting a household with children and adults at only $15,000/yr. Reaching this educational milestone will not only make Pat more employable, but it will also enable her to generate higher earning power for her family and grandchildren.
