Vincianna from Oakland, CA

I’m a former foster youth and a mother. I need a laptop to succeed in school.

Taking care of my two small children inspires me to push harder. I want to be able to study at home with my children.

Thank you from Vincianna Mar 5, 2014

This lovely note came today from Vincianna:

The feeling is amazing - to have a need, share your story and have people (that you do not know) support you. The feeling is one of a kind! I already can see how reaching my academic goals will be easier.

To the people that helped by donating, thank you for showing me the true meaning of committing selfless acts to improve the lives of others.

The humanitarian award goes to you all!

Overview

I need a computer/laptop to help meet my needs for school this coming semester. Meeting this need will help me because I am having a hard time meeting homework assignment deadlines because I often have to get creative with my time and where I can use a computer.

For example, my kids had a cold and it was difficult to go over a friends' house to complete assignments with my kids feeling under the weather. It would have been very helpful to get some studying done while my kids were napping.

My current situation is I recently moved into my first place and moving expenses were difficult to meet. I am raising two small children on my own. Living expenses on top of paying for my education is a huge burden. My goal is to become a social worker, and be the social worker that I needed and I know many of the youth and young adults need today. I want to go on to do consulting for foster care agencies around the world and improve the outcomes of foster youth. I have a strong passion for at risk youth, because I was an at risk youth and many people have planted seeds in me that are continuing to grow each day. I would like to plant those seeds, change the outcome statistics and watch a beautiful garden flourish with resilient young men and women. I have a goal and with each step closer my goal gets bigger, I like to push myself. I have learned that with each step I take towards my goal, I grow and I see my self achieving even more than I set out to in the first place. It all starts with a dream and ambition and I hope never lose that!

I'm from the Bay Area. I live in the city of Alameda. Something interesting about me is that I am optimistic... I'm happiest when I am spending time with my two beautiful children (ages 5 and 1). I'm most proud of my accomplishments and my motivation to push harder! I have two children, my daughter is 5 years old and loves to sing and dance for her little brother and I. My son will be two next month and he enjoys repeating everything that his sister does. My kids mean the world to me. I have experienced many challenges throughout life and my kids make every moment worth it! They are truly my motivation. I hope to continue giving them the childhood they deserve! I am grateful for the opportunity to further my education. I currently give back to the community through my advocacy and plan to obtain a degree in social work, so I can go on to make greater changes in the foster care community. I have a mission to one day, return all the many favors that were given to me onto youth and young adults who are in the shoes walking a similar journey that I once traveled.

We met when Vincianna signed up for Beyond Emancipation services in 2010. Her goals were to find housing and employment and both goals were met this year.

I think meeting this need is important because Vincianna invested a lot of money into her new apartment and has needed a laptop, but cannot afford one. She also expressed that occasionally she works from home, so she could work on projects at home as well as do her academic work for school.

Since Vincianna is a single mother of two, being at home with her children is more convenient when she needs to work on a computer.
