George from Chicago, IL

Left homelessness! I need basic household items to prepare for self-sufficiency.

I'm proud to have overcome 22 years of homelessness! I need help with basic household items to get me started and help me prioritize my job search.

Overview

My name is George, and I am 53 years old living in Chicago. I was homeless and living on the streets for 22 years and recently got accepted into a housing program. This is the first time I have ever lived by myself and I am so excited!

My goals are to get a job and become self-sufficient so I can maintain my new apartment.

The housing program provided me with the basics. I currently don't have a working stove so I have no way to cook for myself. Until the housing program can provide me with a working stove, I would really love to have a microwave and a crock pot so I can prepare meals for myself in my new apartment. I would also like some basic cleaning supplies so I can keep my apartment really clean.

Meeting this need will help me because I am finally housed after so many years but am unable to prepare meals for myself right now! I am having to use the limited funding I have to travel to soup kitchens. I would really like to save that money so I can travel to apply for jobs instead.

George has been a guest of the Elam Davies Social Service Center for many years. I met him last year and we entered him into a housing database. He was recently pulled from the database and we've been working diligently to get him housed after so many years on the streets. He is so excited and motivated to make great changes in his life, but not being able to cook for himself is really keeping him from his goal of self sufficiency. It would be so great to see George receive this help!
