Ruth from Charlotte, NC

My landlord wouldn't turn on the hot water. I need a security deposit for a new home.

I've found a room where I can afford the monthly rent on the income from my 3 jobs. I need help with a security deposit to move in.

Overview

I am an organic farmer's market employee in Charlotte, where I've been for the past 2 and a half years. I also sell Speak Up Magazine to supplement my income.

I hope to be self-sufficient and to live in a house where I feel safe and secure and in charge of my own life. I want a stable income and I want to be happy.

I was recently evicted from a room I was renting because I was repeatedly asking my landlord to turn on the hot water. Now, I have found a new room on my bus route, but I lack the money needed for a security deposit. I can afford the monthly rent, but this initial boundary is really preventing me from getting into a house.

Meeting this need will help me because I will return to a stable environment. I have worked so hard the past decade to get where I am, but my sudden eviction has really thrown my plans in the wrong direction. If I can get into a room, I can stay in a room.

I have known Ruth for the past two years because we both work at Speak Up Magazine. Honestly, she is the nicest person I have ever met. She frequently offers to take me out lunch, even though she barely makes enough money to keep herself fed and housed. She has an incredible spirit, and everyone who meets her instantly adores her. She works three different part-time jobs to stay afloat, and this room represents the perfect situation for her. We know that she will be able to keep up with the room payments, so long as she can get over the initial hurdle of the security deposit. I have never met someone who deserves an opportunity more than Ruth.
