A Thank-You from Eva Dec 7, 2012

I was very happy to learn that I was a recipient of a laptop and a printer. I am writing to thank you for your generous, financial support towards my higher education. By awarding me a laptop and printer, I will be able to concentrate on what is important for my education. Your financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goal just as you have helped me.

Thank you from Survivors of Torture/Patricia Hilliard Dec 6, 2012

We are so thrilled and full of gratitude to the Benevolent team and the Giving Community that helped my client "Eva" fulfill her need for a laptop and printer. I only wish I could share with you all the look on her face when we gave her the good news. This very special woman has experienced so much persecution in her life and came to us with no hope for the future. To see her bright and shining smile today and to hear from her how Hope has been restored, how her Belief that there is more light than darkness in this world after all, is the greatest reward for us. I have no doubt this extraordinary young woman is going to reach her goal of medical school and provide that same Hope for many others. Thank you so very much for this opportunity, Blessings to you!

Overview

I need to purchase a laptop which will help me further my education by attending medical school. This includes a laptop, the appropriate Antivirus software, and a printer.

After graduating from high school I attended university in my home country of Ethiopia, studying engineering for three years. I was unable to complete that degree because of political unrest in the country and eventually had to flee to the United States due to persecution. Currently I am an asylum seeker who is hoping to begin a new chapter of my life.

By meeting this need I will be able to begin schooling this upcoming year and I will have the best opportunity to be successful. I want to be able to attend medical school to become a pediatrician and having a laptop will help make my studies much easier. I know what it takes to be successful in school, as I have already completed three years of university in my home country. I had a 3.75 grade point average there, and I would like to do just as well in my schooling here in the United States. I know that a laptop would help me to achieve this goal.

Meeting this need will help me achieve future goals because it will allow me to navigate the United States university systems better, as many use computer programs to reach their students. If my need is met I know I will be able to continue my education and reach my goal of becoming a pediatrician who works with children who are suffering from HIV/AIDS.

My biggest challenges are that I do not have the funds to afford both school and the laptop. I am currently living in the United States as an asylum seeker, having fled my home country due to political persecution. I do not have any immediate familial support because they do not live in this country.

I have overcome many hardships in my life and I know what it means to fight for something that is important. My education is something I value and I would love to be able to reach my goals so that I can one day help others just like many have helped me along my journey.

Currently I am living in the United States as an asylum seeker. I had to flee my country because of political persecution, leaving my entire family behind. I would like to be able to build upon the higher education that I have already attained and attend medical school. Growing up, I volunteered much of my time to working with children who have HIV/AIDS. Through this experience, a passion was ignited in me to help others and I would love to be able to give back to those who are suffering from this disease. Not only do I realize but I have also seen the effects of good medical care, knowing how it can change a person's life for the better. The inspiration I received from those children has motivated me to pursue a career as a pediatrician, hopefully working with clients who have HIV/AIDS.

As a survivor of torture, I have overcome many hurdles to be where I am today and I am proud of what I have accomplished. My education is very important to me and my future career goals inspire me to continue to work hard. I also enjoy volunteering my time to help others in need.

I would describe myself as a passionate person who is both eager and willing to broaden my knowledge base. I consider myself to be a fast learner, someone who takes the initiative, and I have acquired good time management skills.

Something interesting about me is that I love almost all types of sports and am hoping to learn to play tennis in the near future.

I have known Eva for approximately one year. We have been providing her services since her arrival in the U.S. as she is seeking asylum.

I think meeting this need is important because this young woman has overcome incredible barriers in order to reach her educational goals. Throughout all of her hardships, Eva has remained committed to her educational studies and is extremely deserving of any and all assistance in reaching her goals to become a pediatrician.

This will move the recipient's life forward by helping her navigate the US educational system which is now primarily focused with online instruction and assignments.

Throughout many difficulties in her life, Eva has remained steadfast with her commitment toward serving others in need and has consistently put others first. Eva is an incredibly deserving and committed self educator. It will benefit many people in the future to have a culturally competent pediatrician in the U.S. who is as selfless as this woman.
