My job title is Family Advocate. My work involves working with people in poverty to help them become more self-sufficient by linking them to resources.
What I like about my job is that it is always interesting! Every family I work with is obviously different, and I have had the honor of getting to be a part of their lives. When I am able to be of help, it makes me feel very good.
I have a background in adult education, but I have been working directly with families for about seven years. I realized as an adult educator that many of my students led very complicated lives. Later, I began to fit the pieces together and learned that being raised in and living in poverty makes life very, very difficult, especially in terms of improving circumstances. That's why it's important that people who live in poverty get extra support.
